sir,
I beg to acknowledge your letter of the 27th December last, No. 27375/97, enclosing for the information of the Wesleyan Army and Navy Committee a dispatch from His Excel- lency the Governor of Hong Kong, and other documents (here- with returned) relating to the grant of a site to the Wesleyan Methodist Church for a Soldiers' and Sailors'
Home at that station.
I am to ask you to be good enough to convey to Mr. Secretary Chamberlain the respectful thanks of the Commit- tee for affording it an opportunity of considering these communications.
The Committee has ventured to delay its reply pending detailed information from its representatives who were
returning from Hong Kong.
This it has now received, and I am instructed to say
that the Committee is in full accord with the Rev. William
Musson in his desire to establish a Soldiers' and Sailors'
Home in Hong Kong, that it is prepared to support him in
the undertaking and that it approves of his action in ap-
proaching His Excellency the Governor with a view to se-
cure a site.
The Committee after careful consideration is of
opinion that the site suggested in Arsenal Street will be
suitable for the purpose, and I am accordingly instructed
very respectfully to ask Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to ap-
The Under Secretary of State
For the Colonies
